Why do they want to wait?

  •

This past January I was at my annual gynecology appointment and my ob/gyn found a lump in my left breast.  I asked if we could have a mammogram and she stated no, that she didn't feel it was anything serious, but, she did schedule me to have an ultrasound on that same day!  The first ultrasound only showed dense breast tissue.  I asked for a mammogram again and was told I didn't need one.  I was also told by my doctor that if she thought it was anything serious, she would have referred me to a breast specialist.  They said they wanted me to come back in 3 months for a follow up ultrasound so in April I went back for a 2nd ultrasound.  This time, the dense breast tissue was more prominent on the films and almost looked like a mass and there was also cysts present as well.  I was referred to a breast specialist and was seen 2 weeks later.  She saw me all of 5 minutes and told me that I had fibrocystic breasts and that I simply had dense breast tissue and recommended I go back in 3 months for a follow up!  Why would m doctors make me wait when there is an obvious change in breast tissue that is noticeable on the ultrasound films?  Is this normal?  I asked about a biopsy and was told that I probably didn't need one!!  I have yet to make peace with this information because I feel that not all has been done to rule out breast cancer.  Does anyone have any information that might help me figure out which way to go now??

If you do not feel comfortable with your doctors opinoin, I suggest you get your films and go get a second opinion.  It can not hurt, but It can I help you to feel better about your situation.

I had to do this to find out about my cancer.  They were wanting to wait 6 more months when we had already been waiting a year.  Meanwhile my DCIS took over 1/2 my breast.

I will talk to you later,

You need to get a second opinion. There is no need for you to live in fear for several months.

Honey you need to not walk away but run away from these doctors. There was a change in the three months, what are they thinking. First of all you should not have to ask for a momogram, that should have been the first thing that they should have done. I agree with the other ladies, pick up your films and find a good breast specialist. I would not be able to feel confident in this doctors finding. I wish you luck, please don't just sit around for another 3 months. Listen to what your body is trying to tell you. Good luck hun, I will keep you in my prayers.

I'd really recommend getting a second opinion. When I found a lump, my doctor thought it was nothing, too. But the first thing he told me was "if your doctor ever tells you not to worry, get a new doctor." Even thinking the results would be negative, he made sure I was tested within a week... and thank God he did, because it turned out to be cancer. If he had just assumed that it was a cyst or benign and left it, I would be in a much worse prediciment.

It's very possible that your doctors are right and the tissue is just dense... but it's better to be safe than sorry. Push until you either get good news or treatment. Either way is better than waiting.

What did you find out?  I was just wondering about you.  Let me know if there is something I can do.  I know about the waiting around.
